Topic: The 4 P’s: The Simple (but not easy) System for Structuring Your Book Successfully

In the revision stage of writing a good book, writers frequently find themselves with a strong first draft but no good system for shaping it. In this workshop I cover the four essential ingredients of a powerful revision, I call the 4 P’s. I have distilled many years of teaching creative writing into this system for knowing how to write a revision that works. In the workshop we will craft first paragraphs to showcase these elements and critique them.

Problem: what is at stake?

People: fully crafted characters. Which ones need to be rounded? What role do characters and story play in nonfiction?

Place: not only creating a world but adding dimension and depth to it. How this applies to memoir and nonfiction as well as to novels.

Plot: using the oldest teachings in dramatic structure to create the freshest and strongest plot arc, whether in novel, memoir, or work of nonfiction.
