The Art and Science of
Writing Winning Short Stories
Presenter: Ariella Moon, Author, YA
Short stories and novels have a lot in common. Both require structure, but the structure differs in an important way. Both call for emotional impact to pull readers in but short stories are hampered in the way this can be done. In this interactive workshop, attendees will first study examples of winning short stories to see how they: create an emotional impact, and how the author structures story and character arc’s for maximum effect. Participants will then be given templates to structure their own work, learn how to use prompts to “juice” the creative process, understand how to create the “defining moment” when everything changes (for the character) and the reader is compelled to read to the end. We will also cover: where to get your short stories published, how to format short stories for submission and how to write a dynamic “sizzling sentence” to describe your story that will capture the reader or editors interest.
