Description:
The days when short stories were regulated to prestigious literary magazines ended with the rise of new reading platforms and indie-publishing. Now authors incorporate short stories, novelettes, and flash fiction into their transmedia strategy. In this interactive writing lab, you will discover how short, impactful fiction can help you hone your craft, boost your creativity, and expand your fictional world and readership.
We will examine how masters of short fiction reveal a character’s essence and build emotion without the luxury of a novel’s broad canvas. You will discover how to “mind the gaps,” and utilize Hemingway’s iceberg theory. You will have opportunities during the lab to practice these and other short fiction techniques.
After learning the differences between short stories, novelettes, and flash fiction, and practicing proven techniques for writing these genres, we’ll brainstorm how you can best incorporate short fiction into your publishing and marketing plan.
