The Twists and Turns of the Publishing Industry

About Dak Kopec: A literary force of nature — part architect of the mind, part maestro of human drama, Dak Kopec is a prize-winning author and internationally renowned architectural psychologist. Dak doesn’t just tell stories — he engineers them. With a pen sharpened by insight and a pulse tuned to justice, he crafts bold, emotionally charged narratives that tear down façades and expose the truth within. His mission? To stir hearts, challenge norms, and architect a more humane world — one story at a time.
Description: Popular directives tell us to write query letters, secure an agent, and publish with a big publishing house. While this path may be suitable for some, it may not be the best fit for others.
In this presentation, Dak will share candid “war stories” from the perspective of an introverted writer—someone who often jokes that it takes a court order and a judge to get him out of the house. Drawing on nearly 20 years in publishing, he will walk through the major decision points in his writing career, from securing an agent to choosing a publishing house, unpacking the reasoning behind each choice.
Dak will highlight the publishing process step by step, weighing the pros and cons as he weaves in both his successes and the roadblocks he encountered along the way. He will reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and where he still needs to invest more time and energy. By sharing both the triumphs and the missteps, Dak hopes to offer fellow writers practical insight and encouragement as they chart their own publishing journeys.
