The Forgotten Power

of Poetry

About Steven Bychyk and Joella Muncel

Steven Bychyk, a poet and film graduate from Victoria, British Columbia, channels life with Asperger’s into vivid, Jim Morrison–inspired poetry that reveals the depth and rhythm of his inner world.

Kate Spencer, a mental health professional turned poet, found creative awakening in the Mojave Desert. Writing as Joella Muncel, she explores self-discovery and authenticity through poetry, fairy tales, and The White Tigerproject.

Presentation Overview: Words have meaning, and the way those words come together is meaningful. Poetry can be written to allow readers to glimpse a world of thought and ideas that differ from their own, or it can be used as a therapeutic method that enables others to gain insight into one’s understanding of the world.

In this workshop, you will:

  1. Hear two poems that express the inner thoughts of a person with Asperger’s syndrome.

  2. Analyze the Power of Poetry to move the message from Story into Reality.

  3. Discuss why the human brain loves poetry.

  4. Discuss the history of Poetry as a vehicle for Storytelling and Mythmaking.
